John Mayer: Throwing Yourself Under the Bus
In this day of social media, news spreads like wild fire, catching up with you before you blink. In the past day or so, we’ve seen John Mayer throw himself under the bus with an interview in Playboy and subsequently face the wrath of fans on Twitter. Because our team at Lightfield does not read or support Playboy, we won’t link to this article, but you can find more info about what took place in one of these other articles-HERE and HERE. To sum it up, Mayer said some degrading things about women (specifically women in his past) and used a racial slur. Two things that’ll get you in hot water real fast.
My wife and I had the chance to catch Mayer in concert last night. Knowing he’d be on his best behavior due to the happenings of the day, he was certainly closed lipped the entire night. Until the end. During a breakdown in his song “Gravity,” Mayer went on at length about his volatile personality and how he needed to change. He apologized for his words and said he’d be playing his guitar more and speaking less in the future. All good things to hear for those of us who are fans of his music and not his persona. It was a very candid moment, as candid as it can get in front of 15,000+ people.
In the end, we left the show with a little bit more respect for John. His words are inexcusable and he will face whatever may come from it. It’s good to see a celebrity own up to their actions and take the fall for it. However far that fall may be, time can only tell. I left with a reminder that celebrities are human too. We all make mistakes and all deserve a chance to make it right.

good post zach attack. I’ve love Mayer since he first entered the scene. His melodies are incredible and he will be known for his guitar playing long after he leaves this world. He is amazing…but over time I have loathed his persona and what he stands for. It is depressing to see someone with so much talent simply thrust it towards an empty ideal which creates a never-ending addiction to filling that void. He breaks my heart. He and Dave Matthews. With that being said, I still secretly love his work. And though he as a person is currently in the negative range of cool points, he just earned several back. Good news is that there’s hope. In the end, he’s just a guy with a gift…and maybe he’s starting to realize some things that will better him. Here’s to hoping.
